1951 Morgan Plus 4 Flat Rad – Left Hand Drive

(number plate not included)

Mileage: 13,000 since rebuild completed in 1993

Connaught Green Coachwork and Black interior & weather equipment

Chassis No P2104 was one of the very earliest of this model with build actually completed in 1950 (1143 in series were produced between 1951 & 1958). Copy of Factory Build Book records this was exported by the factory, in January 1951, finished in Green, to Angel Motors in Pasadena, USA.

Contrary to some sources, and erratic Factory Build Book records, it has been verified from other factory records (extract from test driver Charlie Curtis’ personal log) as the very first LHD version in the series, and test driven by him in 1950. All confirmed by Melvyn Rutter.

It is thus of significant historical importance both as first left hand drive car of this series and also first car exported of this model.

Little of its history in USA is known but latterly it had two tone, Burgundy/Black paintwork and it had done at least 136,000 miles. When current owner purchased it on its return to UK in 1989 it had been owned by a Davis H Sherman in Tamarac, Florida.

It was totally rebuilt by Phaeton Engineering of Emsworth in the early 1990’s regaining its original green livery but retaining both LHD layout and a USA inserted upgrade TR engine, which had replaced the original less powerful Vanguard unit.

Since then it has participated in many of the Annual Morgan meets, as far as Scotland, Newcastle, Wales and Cornwall as well those much nearer to its home in Sussex. Classic Le Mans has also figured on its journeys as well as track days at Goodwood and Brighton Speed Trials -on a wet September day in 1998, 17.8 sec Standing Quarter-Mile.

The quality of rebuild is superb with great attention to detail and for example the dashboard was crafted from a rough hewn lump of carefully selected 80 year old Maple by an IT friend who “as a hobby does some woodwork”!

It has original US Title documents with all import papers upon return to UK in 1989.There is a file which includes copies of Factory records, all rebuild documents and subsequent full history,  MOT’s, servicing (mainly done by Owner) and repairs and having covered only 13,000 miles since rebuild – part of a collection – it is in excellent condition

Selected as MSCC entry at Autoglym Inter-Club Concours, NEC May 1995, it has latterly gained following awards:
